Brief.

As investors in Site Pod, npd identified a critical gap in the construction safety market. Existing temporary fire alarm systems for construction sites either lacked advanced features or were prohibitively expensive at double the cost. The challenge was to design a superior networked fire alarm system that would outperform competitors while maintaining a mid-market price point.

The system needed to address key industry pain points: short battery life, damage during transit, poor signal, and limited zone functionality. Additionally, it required environmental credentials through rechargeable components and robust construction for harsh worksite conditions.

Process.

The project began with npd meeting with our network of health and safety advisors and construction industry professionals to research market requirements.  This user centred approach ensured we addressed real-world needs rather than simply improving existing technology.

Bespoke electronics were developed to tailor the functionality specifically for construction site environments. We incorporated technology that effectively penetrates steel and concrete structures, housed within a robust IP55-rated enclosure for protection in harsh environments.

We employed a user-centered design approach for the creation of the control board, implementing zone functionality allowing configuration of up to 16 different safety zones for better site management. The biggest challenge was developing a dual battery system that would extend operational life from the industry standard 3 months to 5 months without compromising on performance, size or cost.

We redesigned the activation system with a flush push-button mechanism to prevent damage during transit between sites. Throughout the design process, we built in future capability to unlock software upgrades as the business evolves, ensuring the product remains at the cutting edge without requiring hardware replacements.

Every component was selected and tested for durability and reliability in construction environments during the 4-month product development period.

Result.

The Fire Alarm 2.0 system represents a significant advancement in construction site fire safety. This innovative solution addresses all the limitations of existing systems while maintaining a mid-market price point—approximately half the cost of comparable premium alternatives.

The system has been rapidly adopted across construction sites nationwide, creating new standards for temporary fire alarm solutions. Its ability to network 50+ interconnected portable alarms has proven particularly valuable for larger, complex construction projects where comprehensive coverage is essential.

By bringing assembly in-house, npd has established an efficient manufacturing process with greater quality control and reduced supply chain vulnerabilities. The forward-thinking design with built-in upgrade capability ensures the Fire Alarm 2.0 will remain competitive and relevant as safety requirements evolve.
