Frequently Asked Questions
What does a product design and engineering consultancy do?
npd Studio manages the full product development journey, from initial research and concept through mechanical and electronic engineering, prototyping, and into production. Every capability is connected, with one team responsible for the outcome.
What sectors does npd work in?
Defence and aerospace, manufacturing and industrials, energy, sports innovation, health and wellbeing, and consumer. We have a dedicated studio inside BAE Systems’ Altitude facility at Warton. In health and wellbeing, we redesigned adaptive oxygen therapy technology for Paralympic athletes, and in sports innovation we took golf performance technology to the PGA Show. Alongside that, we’ve worked on energy storage products, industrial equipment, and consumer devices.
How quickly can npd actually deliver a product?
Faster than most in-house teams expect, because we’re not starting from scratch on process each time. Twelve years across defence, energy, sports, health, and consumer products means we’ve already solved a version of most engineering problems before a client walks in the door. That cross-sector experience is the real accelerant: a manufacturing shortcut learned on a consumer product, a certification process understood from defence work, a materials choice proven in energy storage. All of it is available from day one, rather than being worked out fresh on the client’s clock.
BAE Systems is the clearest example. They needed a 7″ avionics interface panel for the Typhoon simulator programme, built to defence-grade standards: accuracy, traceability, full documentation. The industry baseline for that kind of work is 18 months. We delivered in 3, working from a dedicated studio inside BAE Systems’ Altitude facility at Warton. Not by cutting corners. By not needing to relearn the fundamentals of rapid, rigorous product development from a standing start.
The honest answer on timeline is always project-specific. But the pattern holds: sector-agnostic expertise is what turns an 18-month process into a 3-month one, without cutting the corners a client would worry about.
