Brief
In a world where technology increasingly disrupts our well-being, a critical problem emerged: sleep deprivation and digital addiction. Staggering statistics reveal the profound impact of phone use:
- 1 in 3 workers check emails at night time
- 10% of teens check their phone over 10 times during the night
- Just 30 minutes of phone use before bed can reduce REM sleep by up to 25%
The challenge was to create a device that breaks our unhealthy relationship with technology while still providing essential communication functionality.
Process
This is exactly the kind of brief we love to work on at npd – a project solving a real issue in the world and making people’s lives better. Working closely with Zebble’s founder, our mission was to create a device that defies everything we know about technology and connection.
We were adamant that the device should not look like traditional technology. Inspired by organic forms, we developed a pebble-like concept that would blend seamlessly into home spaces. Our team explored innovative materials and manufacturing techniques, including custom textures and specialized production methods to create a device that looks more like a natural object than a piece of tech.

We worked to miniaturize technology while maintaining essential functionality, focusing on creating a device that doesn’t demand attention. Through extensive prototyping, we developed a solution that intentionally prevents the mental triggers associated with digital devices, reducing cortisol and adrenaline to promote restful sleep.
Our approach went beyond traditional design – we were creating a tool for mental wellbeing, a way to help people reclaim their personal time and restore healthy sleep patterns.
Results
We created a device that breaks the cycle of tech addiction while keeping users connected. Zebble looks nothing like a phone – it’s a pebble-like tool that lets you receive essential communications without the mental clutter of a smartphone.
Users can still get emergency calls, set alarms, and access sleep support, but without the scrolling, notifications, and screen-induced stress. It’s communication simplified, designed to help you disconnect without feeling cut off.
The result? A smart solution that puts sleep and well-being first, proving that sometimes less technology means more life
